Local Vermont Places to Get Your Thanksgiving Food

by Matt Haefele

Thanksgiving is a special time to gather with friends and family to enjoy an amazing meal. Vermont has a reputation for incredible local food - and for good reason. The fresh, authentic ingredients and thoughtful farming practices make for some truly delicious products that can’t be missed this season. We rounded up our favorite spots to help make this Thanksgiving go that much smoother using the best ingredients and local tips from around our beautiful state.

Turkeys

Adams Turkey Farm
Founded in 1984 by Dave and Judy Adams, this local favorite takes incredible pride in their turkeys, raising them on “all natural, all vegetarian, antibiotic and hormone free grain.” The birds are given plenty of natural sunlight and room to roam in the open-air barn, and are processed on-site. Pickup your turkey the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, from 12pm-6pm. Pre-order here

Misty Knoll
Misty Knolls is a family-owned operation, who raise their turkeys naturally on their New Haven farm to foster the best birds in Vermont. The turkeys grow up in a stress-free environment, and consume a healthy diet which makes them succulent and flavorful. These free-range birds go quick, so be sure to get in line when they go on sale from Monday 11/21 to Wednesday 11/23.

City Market
City Market is an iconic co-op in downtown Burlington. Serving locals and visitors alike since 2002, they offer a wide selection of local treats, pre-made goodies, and all kinds of beverages for your Thanksgiving needs. They have birds from local Vermont farms at a variety of price points and sizes. Be sure to order ASAP as turkey pre-orders are filling up fast!

Healthy Living
Healthy Living Market is located in South Burlington and Williston, and is a favorite for unique, fresh eats. All the available turkeys are raised without antibiotics and sourced from Vermont farmers. Need help getting your bird in the right shape? Just ask the butchers and they can spatchcock or debone your turkey. Get your turkey orders in by 11/13 (and side orders by 11/20) so everything can be ready for the big day!

Make your life easier - let someone else handle the sides!

Leunig’s
Leunig’s brings “panache in the center of downtown Burlington,” and offers a variety of side dishes to ease your Thanksgiving Day stress. One of our seasonal favorites is the Peanut & Golden Beet Bisque, which has roasted golden beets & peanuts simmered with tomatoes, onions, celery, carrots, sumac, peppers, & cumin. If you are looking for something else, all of their incredible recipes are sure to satisfy any guests you have on the big day!

Cold Hollow Cider Mill
A favorite among locals and visitors alike, The Cold Hollow Cider Mill in beautiful Waterbury has an incredible selection of local treats and everything apples. From fresh cider donuts, endless maple products, and even hard cider, this roadside gem has plenty to keep your guests happy this Thanksgiving. Before you head out, be sure to try the free apple cider samples in the back!

Richmond Community Kitchen
This oh-so-Vermont spot in charming Richmond is the perfect place to pick up everything you need to bring your Thanksgiving to life this year. Take your pick of their delicious frozen sides, like the smoky gazpacho or chorizo & veggie crustless quiche. Head over a few weekends before the big day and throw the meals in your freezer at home to make your Thanksgiving cooking a breeze!

Burlington Farmers Market
The farmers market is a great place to not only get some great local products, but also connect with the very people who make them. Usually taking place outside during the summer months, the Burlington Farmers Market moves inside for a few weekends this winter. The best time to go is the Sunday before Thanksgiving to stock up on all your local essentials, from sauces and seasoning to breads and jams.

Mill Market and Deli
Located conveniently on Dorset St. in South Burlington, this local favorite has easy online ordering for all your Thanksgiving needs. Owners Jim and Antonia have backgrounds as executive chefs and event planners and “believe that sustainably sourced and delicious food don’t have to be mutually exclusive.” You can’t go wrong with the Chili-Maple Brussel Sprouts, 7-Cheese Macaroni and Cheese, and the Savory Cornbread Stuffing!

Philo Ridge Farm
Located in the picturesque Champlain Valley just south of Burlington, this Charlotte farm is one of the best places to pick up your sides for the big day. All animals are raised on the farm's perennial pastures, feeding on fresh grasses and herbs from the fertile land. Looking for a simple way to satisfy all your guests? The Thanksgiving Sides Set is the way to go! Throw in some extra organic veggies, and you’ll have a meal to remember.

Dessert

Poorhouse Pies
Located in quaint Jericho VT, Poorhouse Pies has been serving hungry pie-lovers for the past 12 years. Founders Jamie and Paula keep the spirit of this grassroots business alive to this day, making pies with authentic local ingredients from around Vermont. They are taking orders for both sweet pies like the classic pumpkin or apple crumb, and savory pies like the rainbow veggie quiche and VT sausage and mushroom quiche. Be sure to give them a call at 802-858-9129 or stop by soon!

Pie Society
Owner and chef Johnathan Davis is a Vermonter who has experience baking and cooking in many local favorites around VT, like Daily Chocolate in Vergennes and Mirabelle’s Bakery in Burlington. His experience is reflected in the incredible quality of his pies, using unique recipes and ingredients from local producers. Just like Poorhouse, they offer sweet and savory pies which can be ordered here
