If you’re looking for a vibrant and dynamic community with a walkable village and historic charm, look no further than Bristol, Vermont. Nestled at the foot of the Green Mountains and bordered by the New Haven River, Green Mountain National Forest, and Champlain Valley’s farms and fields, this cozy town is just minutes from outdoor recreation opportunities for every season and every resident.
While Bristol is removed from the big city life – a little over five hours to New York City and three and a half hours to Boston – it’s a short 44-minute drive to Burlington and an hour to Montpelier and Stowe, so in-state travel is easily accessible.
A Bristol summer is full of swimming, kayaking, hiking, and fishing. Horseshoe tournaments at Sodbusters Horshoe Club and Town Band Concerts on the green are a summer tradition dating back to the mid-1800s. The winter has plenty of skiing and snowshoeing to offer as well!
Despite its charming singular traffic light, downtown Bristol has plenty of restaurants and shops to keep residents busy. Walk down Main Street to find an artist-cooperative gallery, a yarn store and yoga studio, a florist, a classic country store, and so much more. Dining opportunities range from cafes to breweries to comfort food hubs and are all conveniently located near the town’s center. We recommend heading to Cubbers for a fresh slice of pizza.
There’s always something to look forward to with Bristol’s many annual events. The Pocock Rocks Music Festival & Street Fair is a summer celebration of everything Bristol has to offer, with live musical performances, plenty of kids’ activities, and over 30 vendors of various specialty foods, drinks, and crafts. December’s Chocolate Walk is an opportunity for small businesses to draw in holiday shoppers by providing various chocolate treats for an afternoon. December also offers the Lumen Celebration of Fire & Light, featuring fire performers, a lantern walk down Main Street, fire pits with s’mores available, and delicious food and beverages for all visitors.
