Over 150 years old and counting, Ludlow, Vermont might be popularly known as a ski destination, but is truly a 4-season village with so much to offer year round. With incredible dining, shopping, and lots of activities (indoor and out), this cozy town is a fundamental part of Vermont's current cultural landscape and our state’s long history – a section of Ludlow was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Home to Okemo Mountain Resort and a host of great public and private schools, there’s no shortage of employment, educational, and recreational opportunities in Ludlow. Located at the junction of Route 100/103 in Windsor County, right in the heart of the Okemo Valley, this southern VT gem is a wonderful place to call home.
With a two-hour drive to Burlington, three hours to Boston, and under five hours to New York City, Ludlow is a perfect place to escape from city life and embrace the serenity and connectivity of a small community.
Okemo Mountain Resort is the main attraction of Ludlow and that means that all year round, there is always something to do outdoors. In the summertime, try taking the scenic chairlift to get a new perspective of Ludlow’s landscape, or grab your bike and hit the terrain at Evolution Bike Park (it’s lift-serviced, too). You can also hop aboard Okemo’s four-season outdoor roller coaster, the Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster, for a thrilling and scenic ride through the alpine forests and along the mountain. In the winter, take your skis or snowboard to Okemo’s slopes to experience their impeccably maintained snow and innovative terrains. For a challenge, try skiing the East’s longest superpipe or exploring The Zone, a skate-park-inspired terrain park.
Beyond Okemo’s offerings, Ludlow also has an incredible and interactive natural landscape to explore – Buttermilk Falls and Camp Plymouth State Park are must-frequents for any nature lover. If you’re more into the arts than the outdoors, Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts makes it easy to get involved in Ludlow’s art community and hone your skills. Managed by the non-profit Society of Vermont Artists and Craftsmen, Fletcher Farm School offers a wide range of weekend courses in many mediums through the winter and spring, and daily in the summer. The Black River Academy Museum is also a wonderful place to explore or take the kids to learn about local history and admire the 1888 architecture.
Ludlow has a great selection of local shops and restaurants to enjoy – some even call it a “year-round foodie destination.” If you’re looking for an every-Sunday breakfast spot with a wide variety of menu options, we recommend The Hatchery (and if you like seafood, try their Crab Cakes Benedict!). For farm-to-table dinners, featuring local produce and native fish and game, stop by Homestyle Hotel’s cozy restaurant, and if you’re thirstier than you are hungry, Main + Mountain has an impressive selection of craft cocktails to choose from. If you’ve got a passion for fashion, you’ll definitely frequent cute clothing boutique 3 Graces, and if you need local art or trinkets to warm up your new Ludlow home or to send to out-of-staters, try Blue Sky Trading Co. and the Depot Street Gallery. Green Mountain Sugar House is a great place to stock up on any maple treats you might need (syrup, fudge, coffee…) – and make sure to stop by every weekend during the season for their complimentary sugar on snow.
Ludlow has a number of great schools to choose from, and is sure to have the right fit for any school-aged resident. Two Rivers Supervisory Union is Ludlow’s public school district; Ludlow Elementary School and Green Mountain Union High School are the primary public schools in Ludlow. Ski and snowboard academy Okemo Mountain School is a private winter-term option for aspiring snow sport athletes grade 5 through 12, specializing in rigorous academics and an intense on-snow training schedule. The Expeditionary School is another private option for grades 7 through 12, and is an independent school founded in 2018 with a strong mission based around community and holistic learning.
Employment opportunities are evergreen in Ludlow because of the many various positions Okemo Mountain Resort offers. The Town of Ludlow’s website also keeps their employment page updated with any local or government positions that need filling. The local shops, restaurants, and schools also offer potential employment opportunities, depending on your wants, needs, and skill sets.
With a gorgeous landscape, a bounty of indoor and outdoor activities, and a close-knit, vibrant community, Ludlow is an ideal place for families, nature lovers, and everything in between.
