2023 Flood Resources: Recovery Assistance and Volunteer Opportunities
Our thoughts are with those affected by the flooding in our state.
Please be safe! The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a general guide on what to do to recover from a flood.
Do not enter your home if the building is no longer safe. If you cannot assess the safety properly, contact your local fire department. If you are able to enter your home safely, document all damage including both the property and your belongings. If your basement is flooded, your local fire department or local contractors may be able to assist you.
Vermonters are consistently coming together to donate to others in this time of need. Neighbors are donating shelter, food, and other supplies via the VT Flooding 2023 Response and Recovery Mutual Aid Facebook group. There is also a mutual aid spreadsheet where you can add your name and needs.
For those impacted by the flooding, here is a list of local resources to aid you in getting back on your feet:
Flood Damage: If your home or belongings have been damaged from flooding, register for FEMA Aid. To do so, visit disasterassistance.gov or call 800-621-3362.
Contamination: If you have contaminated water, fields, oils, or other hazardous materials, call 1-800-641-5005 or 802-828-1138 for assistance.
Shelter: If you are displaced due to flooding and need a shelter, you can find options by visiting the Red Cross website. In Vermont, there are shelters currently open in Barre and at Northern Vermont University (Johnson campus). FEMA also may be able to assist you.
Food Assistance: If you need assistance getting food, you can find food banks by zip code on the Vermont Food Bank website.
Stay safe and be sure to ask for help if you need it.
If you have the ability to donate or volunteer, here’s a list of resources:
- Register as a volunteer with the State of Vermont. This will add you to a pool of volunteers and allow organizations to access your contact information while looking for assistance.
- Add your name, town, contact information, and what you can provide to the mutual aid spreadsheet put together by Vermont 350.
- Join the VT Flooding 2023 Response and Recovery Mutual Aid Facebook group to see how you can donate time and resources. This is also a great place to find news regarding flooding and post-flooding situations.
- Visit Vermont Public’s website to find sign-up forms for volunteer movements in Montpelier and Waterbury.
- The Vermont Community Foundation is accepting monetary donations to distribute to the most affected communities in the state. Visit their page for more information.
- The Realtor Relief Foundation is putting together grant funds for those in need of housing-related assistance due to flood damage. Donate today.
As Vermonters, we stick together, and we work alongside each other to stay Vermont strong!
