Best Ways to Enjoy Fall Foliage in Vermont This Season!

Vermont is known for its beautiful fall foliage, festivals, and fun! The sheer amount of opportunities can make planning overwhelming! Our solution: a bucket list. Make a list of your can’t-miss fall fun and check them off as you go! Along with exploring the natural beauty, spending time in the local community is a major part of what makes fall so wonderful in Vermont. There is no shortage of local events when the leaves start to change in our Green Mountain state, so we’re sharing a list of our favorites. Use this list as inspiration when creating your fall bucket list!
#1 Take a Fall Hike at Lake Willoughby: Westmore

Lake Willoughby offers some of the most stunning views in the state of Vermont. Carved out by glaciers more than 12,000 years ago, this lake offers crystal clear water and access to activities like hiking, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. To get the best views, we suggest one of Mount Pisgah’s many trail options, a moderate hike that leads you to perfect viewpoints of the water atop lakeside cliffs. This is a busy trail, especially on weekends during peak foliage season, so if you have the opportunity, we suggest visiting during the week.
#2 Find your way out at Sam Mazza’s Corn Maze and Farm Market: Colchester

Sam Mazza’s corn maze is a different shape every year, always offering new routes for all ages to enjoy! The maze is designed and cut by ??Shawn Stolworthy from MazePlay. He uses a special GPS that allows him to cut shapes like Iron Man and Spider-Man into the corn. After you escape the maze, enjoy the farm market inside the Sam Mazza’s store. At the bakery, pick up donuts, cakes, sweet and savory pies, and more!
#3 Walk the grounds at Scott’s Farm Orchard: Dummerston

Apple picking is a classic fall activity. Scott’s Farm Orchard is a scenic and historic farm that has been active since 1791. As an Eco Certified™ orchard and a Certified B Corp, they have a focus on sustainability so they can continue producing heirloom crops for many years to come! Their farm market is open seven days a week, where they press fresh apple cider. Apples are one of their largest crops, but it is far from their only fruit. Along with apples, they grow pears, plums, peaches, blueberries, medlars and many more delicious fruit varieties! Explore the grounds and attend fall events like heirloom apple day and crepe night.
#4 Ride an alpine slide at Bromley Mountain: Peru

Looking for a good way to see the fall foliage fast? Try an alpine slide! The oldest alpine slide in the United States is still in use at Bromley Mountain in Peru. Referred to as “the granddaddy of them all,” this slide stretches a full 2/3 of a mile. If you’re a thrill seeker looking to enjoy some time in the mountains, this is a great fall bucket list item for you to check off!
#5 Enjoy views of foliage with a glass of wine at Snow Farm Vineyard: South Hero

Summer is not the only season you can enjoy time outside at one of Vermont’s many vineyards! Fall is the perfect time to try new varieties of local wine. Vermont’s oldest vineyard, Snow Farm Vineyard and Distillery, offers tastings and beautiful views all year round. The fall isn’t the end of the harvest for the folks at Snow Farm, they harvest grapes even after the first frost of the winter season! Enjoy a wine flight inside the winery or enjoy views on the shores of the Champlain Islands from one of many outdoor seating areas. Support a local business and enjoy the fall foliage from a beautiful vineyard this season!
