Fall Gear Guide

by Matt Haefele

People come from all over the country to see the foliage in Vermont, and for good reason! The yellows, oranges, and reds are a sight to behold, and there is no better way to experience the foliage than getting out for an adventure. Here are a few essentials to keep you comfortable during your fall excursions.

Hiking

Hiking in the fall can be a truly breathtaking experience – in more ways than one. The best views are usually from the highest peaks, and it can take some effort to get there! Views from the top of Camels HumpMount Mansfield, Killington, and Mount Pisgah (just to name a few) are extraordinary! Conditions on these exposed summits can change quickly, so be prepared with a rain jacket, hat, gloves, and rain pants to ensure you stay comfortable and dry. There can even be snow in October!

Running

The fall is when most runners hit their peak; with a summer of miles in the legs and cooling temps you're bound to feel great! To keep rolling into the fall, be sure to throw on a pair of light gloves, a long sleeve, some leggings or joggers, and a headband to fend off the often-windy fall weather. Trails can get a bit more slippery when the leaves start to fall, so be careful when venturing off the pavement on your favorite loop.

Biking

Being comfortable on the bike can be a challenge when the temps drop, but it’s also the best time to see foliage all over the state! Don’t be afraid to be a little chilly when you first start – you’ll warm up quickly! There are a few key items that can help extend your season. Booties or overshoes keep your feet happy, a buff or neck gaiter, windproof insulated gloves, full length bibs, and a windproof vest with a long sleeve base layer will make your fall rides a dream!

Kayaking and Canoeing

There is something about getting out on the water on a beautiful fall day that just cannot be beat! Vermont's rivers and lakes offer a wide range of experiences, from canoe-access camping sites to easy paddles on Lake Champlain. For avid kayakers, a stable setup ready for changing conditions on Lake Champlain means you can stay out all day and carry your gear without any problems. Using a dry bag to keep your valuables safe, a PFD (Life Jacket) for safety, and a paddle to keep moving will lead to a great day! Looking to get out on the water ASAP? There are rentals available all over the state from Vermont State Parks so you can gear up and get out there in no time!

Rock Climbing

Climbers in Vermont love to explore all the rocky terrain and bouldering available throughout the state. While hikers and cyclists get to experience the foliage from well-worn trails and roads, climbers get a unique view, often perched above steep cliffs and rock faces. Climbing outdoors also provides a unique challenge for those who usually stick to the climbing gym, and dealing with a variety of conditions and surfaces can be exciting! To explore popular climbing spots in Vermont, check out this guide from Mountain Project. To get started, always climb with a rope and an experienced partner. Bring your helmet, harness, chalk, carabiners and belay equipment to help conquer new routes.

Swimming

Swimming in the late summer and fall can be a chilly experience, but the stunning foliage and lack of crowds certainly make up for it! If you do choose to get in the water this fall, be sure to have warm, dry clothes nearby that you can throw on to avoid hypothermia. The air temperature may be tolerable, but the lakes and rivers get cold quickly during the fall. For cold water swimmers and dippers looking for a community of like-minded individuals, the Red Hot Chilly Dippers meet regularly to brave the cold waters of Lake Champlain.
