How to Design a Beautiful Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we’re here to make it a day your guests will not forget! If you’re the Thanksgiving host in your family or friend group, you know it can take a lot of work to pick the perfect turkey, prep all the sides, and get your home ready for an influx of people. So, if you want to truly impress your guests, take some time to prepare the perfect Thanksgiving table. Making just a few tweaks to your standard decor will level up your table and get everyone in the mood for gratitude.

Choose a Theme

When it comes to setting up your ideal Thanksgiving table, the first step is choosing a color palette. This will set the stage for the energy you want to bring to the holiday. When you’re choosing your colors, tailor them to your guests— if you have a lot of kids in attendance, you might choose fun and bright colors. On the other hand, if your Thanksgiving is adult-only, you may prefer a more classy option so you can use your fine china. Consider how you can incorporate classic fall colors— muted reds, yellows, oranges, and browns— into your table decor to set the scene.

Food Presentation

The food is the most important part of your Thanksgiving table. We love to source our food from local farms, restaurants, and bakers— find our list of favorites here. Share a variety of food options to make sure there is something for everyone. The classic Thanksgiving menu items are: turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and bread rolls. In addition to these classics, many add mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and green bean casserole to the mix. If you want to hold your guests at bay until the big meal, you will also want some appetizers like shrimp cocktail, veggie platters, and charcuterie boards— something for your guests to pick at while staying out of the kitchen.

In addition to delicious food, we recommend serving seasonal drinks to get your guests into the holiday spirit. Two of our favorites— apple cider mimosas and cranberry cocktails— are the perfect fall drinks and can easily be made into mocktails. Serve these in beautiful glasses with garnishes to impress your guests.

As long as your food tastes good, people will be appreciative. But, if you want to take it the next step further, dress up your food options with themed bowls and platters that fit your color palette. As you add food to these eye-catching dishes, be sure to wipe away any drips and sprinkle parsley or another garnish on top to seal the deal.

Consider whether or not you want to serve your food buffet style or family style. With buffet style, you have more room on the table, whereas with family style, people don’t have to get up for seconds and there’s the shared connection of passing food. Decide which style you prefer and design your tablescape to match.

Foliage & Accents

When creating a beautiful dining table with foliage and other accents, we recommend choosing a simple tablecloth to avoid letting your table feel too busy. You want a perfect balance of accents and “white space,” the empty space around them.

We love creating our own centerpieces— find our DIY centerpiece tutorial article here. Your centerpiece should reflect the theme you’re working with. If you want your table to fit a rustic aesthetic, consider adding a wood round to the center of your table with gourds, pinecones, and a fall flower arrangement on top. Throughout your table, incorporate candles wrapped in natural twine to tie the tablescape together. If you prefer classy and modern decor, your tablescape could consist of white pumpkins, clay vases with singular flowers, and pristine white candlesticks. Looking for the bright, kid-friendly vibe? Add a crafty turkey, a variety of colored pumpkins, and a colorful table runner to spruce up your table decor.

Going Outside Your Standard Decor Comfort Zone

You may dress up your dinner table every night, and if you do, we commend you for your commitment. If not, we encourage you to incorporate elements that make your Thanksgiving table feel fancy. This includes cloth napkins that fit your color scheme, maybe even folded into fun shapes. In addition, consider designing a menu to add to everyone’s plate or a name tag to put at everyone’s seat. These small additions will make your guests feel special and like they’re enjoying a fine dining experience.

No matter what you decide, the most important part about Thanksgiving is the people you surround yourself with. Crafting a memorable Thanksgiving table is about so much more than just the food— it’s about creating an inviting atmosphere that brings your loved ones together to celebrate. The time and care you put into these details will not go unnoticed by your guests. Let your table be a canvas for expressing your creativity and appreciation for your friends and family.
