Spring Gear Guide
In Vermont, spring can add a whole new set of challenges for outdoor recreation, with the seasonal thaw making conditions muddy and wet. Here are a few tips and essentials to enjoy “mud season.”
Hiking, Running, and Biking
Spring can be challenging to get out on the dirt roads and trails around Vermont. The mud generated from melting snow, and the increase in rain storms can lead to washed out trails and the dreaded “peanut butter” mud that sticks to just about everything, including shoes and tires. During the spring, stick to paved roads or paths, or dirt roads that get plenty of sun. The Burlington Greenway, Mt. Philo Access Road, and the Stowe Recreation Path are great places to start. While it can be tough to stay off your favorite routes, the trails and dirt roads will dry up soon! If you do get out onto the trails, stick to boardwalks in muddy sections, and be ready for ice and snow if you head into the mountains. Microspikes are great for these conditions!
Spring skiing
Skiing in the spring? While this may sound contradictory, there can actually be some of the most enjoyable conditions of the year in the warmer spring months. Ski resorts make snow throughout the winter, resulting in a base that can last well into April. In 2022, Killington closed on June 4th! Pond skimming is a popular activity for Vermonters, whether you're a participant or a spectator. Skimmers love to show off goofy outfits and impress the crowd in the spring sun! Warm temps mean you can ski in shorts and a t-shirt, but don’t forget the sunscreen and sunglasses as you get out there.
Getting gear ready for summer
As you put away the ski boots, heavy winter coats, and hats in exchange for bikes and running shoes, this is the perfect time to get everything tuned up. Your bike has likely been sitting dormant for a few months, and those hiking boots might have worn out laces. Take your bike to the shop, or perform your own tune up at home so you can hit the ground running without any issues once that first warm spring day comes around.
Score some deals on winter gear
While you may be trying to put snow and frigid temps out of your mind, spring is actually the perfect time to look for winter gear. Local shops need to make room for bikes, hiking, and climbing equipment, and it's a great time to find clearance sales. The secondhand market is also great for buyers and sellers - locals are looking to clear out their closets for a new bike or camping gear. Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Pinkbike are all great places to find your next deal.
Getting out the door in Vermont can take a little extra effort when conditions change, but you’ll always be thankful for having the right equipment to make the most of your time outdoors. Looking for a place to start all your Vermont adventures? Connect with one of our agents today!
