Summer Gear Guide
Exploring Vermont’s mountains, trails, and forests during the warm and sunny summer months is a truly special experience. To get the most out of your time outside, and be comfortable while doing so, check out the list below.
Hiking
Getting out for a hike is an incredible way to explore the beautiful mountains and trails of Vermont. Hiking is all about keeping your feet happy, and a sturdy, well-fitting hiking boot is a great place to start. These will help protect your feet from sharp rocks, find grip on variable surfaces, and stabilize your ankles on uneven terrain. Be sure to take your new kicks out for a few walks around the neighborhood to break them in and avoid blisters. But boots are just one part of the equation!
Many people think of wool socks as something to wear during the cold winter months, but they are actually ideal for summer hiking as well. Local favorite Darn Tough makes socks for all seasons, but their merino wool hiking socks are perfect for keeping your feet dry, blister free, and cool when you're exploring. Plus, their lifetime warranty means once you wear through your favorite pair, you can send them in for a brand new (free!) replacement.
Hiking up a mountain is hard enough, but going downhill can be even harder on the knees. There is no shame in taking some poles to take the pressure off, letting you hike further and more often! Lastly, bring some sunscreen, a hydration pack or water bottle, and a few snacks (we love Snickers bars or a PB&J) to keep you going on a long trek.
Running
Runners in Vermont enjoy a variety of routes, environments, and surfaces to log some miles on. Extensive rec paths like the Burlington Greenway, Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, and the Trail Around Middlebury are just a few options; check out this list for routes all around the state! Whether you're a trail runner, marathon PR chaser, or just getting ready to crush your first 5k, Vermont is the perfect place to explore and grow as a runner. A pair of shoes ready for a mix of pavement, gravel, and light trails are perfect to enjoy runs all over the state. Looking to expand your shoe closet? Having a dedicated pair of road shoes for speedy group runs and track sessions along with a pair of trail running shoes with a little more traction and support will open up a whole new world of routes to explore! To keep comfortable, a breathable, lightweight pair of shorts and shirt, running socks, and a hat will make for an enjoyable run.
Biking
The cycling community in Vermont is incredibly passionate and welcoming, no matter your level of experience or the terrain you choose to ride! For road cyclists looking to log some big miles every week, a road bike is great for enjoying the rolling and mountainous terrain all over the state. If you want to expand your routes to enjoy the quiet dirt roads of Vermont (there are over 8,000 miles of them), a road or gravel bike with 32mm tires or larger is best to avoid punctures and improve grip on more varied terrain. For mountain bikers ready to shred in the woods, a full suspension mountain bike with 130mm-160mm of travel is perfect for just about anything you can pedal your way up to. Looking for pure speed and efficiency? A cross-country hardtail with 100mm-120mm front fork is a lightweight solution to maximize every pedal stroke.
Dock and boat fishing
Anglers in Vermont are a passionate bunch, and for good reason! People flock from all over the northeast to enjoy Vermont’s pristine waters and variety of fish. The primary species in Vermont are trout, bass, landlocked salmon, pike, and walleye, among others. Fishing in Lake Champlain has improved after years of conservation efforts, and in 2022 three record-setting fish were caught around the Champlain Islands. A simple rod and reel is a great place to start for dock and shoreline fishing. To get the most out of your time on the water, check out these common lures for Vermont fishing. Fly fishers can also enjoy the peace and quiet of Vermont’s rivers and streams. Check out this map to find your perfect spot!
Swimming
Just grab your trunks or bathing suit, and head to the water! But before you jump in, throw on some sunscreen and grab your goggles.
