Located in the northwestern corner of the Green Mountain State bordering Lake Champlain and the Quebec Province in Canada is Swanton, Vermont. This town is a separate entity from Swanton Village, which came to be in 1888. Together, they make up one of the most beautiful and unique areas of the state with a vibrant village center, close-knit residential community, a combination of local businesses and national stores, and breathtaking outdoor recreation options.
Just outside the village center, you can find a more agricultural way of life, steeped in history and tradition for farming anything from dairy to organic vegetables to flowers, meats, and more. If you want to visit one of these farms, head to Hudack Farm to see what this season has to offer! You can also find specialty items like local apple cider, maple syrup, or even their own craft-brewed beer from places like 14th Star Brewing Company! Swanton is also just 15 minutes from the bustling center of St. Alban’s if you feel like changing it up one day and exploring a new town.
Winding through Swanton is the Missisquoi River, a key segment to the Northern Forest Canoe Trail stretching from New York to Maine. This river serves its community as a scenic respite after a long day, a place to cool down with a summertime swim, or a route to paddle for a canoe or kayak adventure. Also, Cohen Park is just a short drive from the town center and sits right on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. It is a less known area which means it is less crowded but not any less beautiful. For a walking or biking adventure, check out Swanton Recreation Path! This portion of the trail was completed in 2009 and connects directly onto the end of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail which is New England’s longest rail making it easy to enjoy natural surroundings while making your way to a variety of scenic stops along the way!
The population of Swanton was 2,450 in 2019, with a median home income of $55,868 and a median home value of $171,400. Younger community members belong to the Missisquoi Valley School District, which includes Missisquoi Valley Union Middle and High School, Swanton School, Franklin Central School, and Highgate Elementary School. This school district prides itself on providing an education that supports all learners and prepares students to become contributing members of society in the future.
